Reticulum / NomadNet: Windows Installation Guide

How to Execute the Automated Reticulum & NomadNet Installer

Instructions for Windows 10 / 11 Only!

1. Introduction

Windows operating systems include built-in security features that prevent the accidental execution of automated scripts. By default, Windows sets the PowerShell "Execution Policy" to Restricted, meaning you cannot run custom .ps1 scripts directly.

To run the automated Reticulum Daemon installer, you must open an "Elevated" (Administrator) PowerShell console and temporarily bypass this restriction. The installer will download and configure Python, the Reticulum Network Stack (RNS), NomadNet, system fonts, and register the background service. This guide will walk you through all of the necessary steps.

2. Preparation

Before beginning, you need to download the automated installer script to your computer.

  1. Right-click on the following link: Install-Reticulum-NomadNet.txt and select "Save link as..." (or "Save target as...").
  2. Save the file directly into your standard Downloads folder.
(It is downloaded with a .txt extension to safely bypass browser download restrictions).
  3. Ensure you know exactly where the file was saved before proceeding to the next steps.

3. Opening an Elevated PowerShell Console

The script requires admin privileges to install system-wide fonts and register the background service.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Menu (or press the Windows key).
  2. Type powershell into the search bar.
  3. In the search results, right-click on Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  4. If a User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device, click Yes.

Note: You can verify you are in an elevated console by looking at the top of the window; the title bar should read "Administrator: Windows PowerShell".

4. Bypassing the Execution Policy & Running the Script

Now that you are in an elevated console, you will rename the file and temporarily adjust the security permissions just for this specific window, ensuring your system remains secure afterward.

Note: For each of the commands provided below you may copy/paste them into the powershell window instead of manually typing them. To do so: Highlight the command and hit CTRL-C, or right click and select copy. To paste into the powershell window simply right click anywhere within the window.

Step A: Navigate to the Script's Location

Use the cd (change directory) command to navigate to the folder where you saved the script. If you saved it in your standard Downloads folder, you can use the ~ shortcut which automatically detects your username. Type the following and press Enter:

cd ~\Downloads

Step B: Revert the File Extension

Before the script can be executed, its file extension must be reverted from .txt back to the PowerShell .ps1 format. You can easily do this right in the PowerShell window to avoid issues with hidden Windows file extensions. Type the following command and press Enter:

Rename-Item -Path ".\Install-Reticulum-NomadNet.txt" -NewName "Install-Reticulum-NomadNet.ps1"

Step C: Apply the Temporary Bypass

To allow the script to run without permanently altering your system's global security policies, we will apply a bypass scoped only to your current session. Type the following command exactly and press Enter:

Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force

This command silently permits the execution of the installer. As soon as you close this PowerShell window, the bypass expires.

Step D: Execute the Installer

With the file renamed and the restriction lifted, you can now run the installer. Type the following command and press Enter:

.\Install-Reticulum-NomadNet.ps1

(The .\ tells PowerShell to look in the current folder for the script.)

5. What to Expect Next

Once you press Enter, the automated installation will begin. The script will output its progress in color-coded text.

The process may take a few minutes as it downloads dependencies like Python, NSSM, and the UbuntuMono Nerd Font. Upon completion, you will see a success message, and two new shortcuts for NomadNet will appear on your desktop. You can safely close the PowerShell window once the script finishes.
